St. Columbus School is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in the country. Located in Lutyens' Delhi, the school is a Christian Brothers institution that began its operations in 1941 with 32 children. Offering classes from nursery through 12th grade, the school currently has over 3,000 students.

The school was started by setting up a tent in the rose garden.

St. Columbus School began with 32 students in a tent in a rose garden. In 1940, Archbishop Reverend Sylvester Patrick Mulligan leased three acres of land to the Christian Brothers, which had been a rose garden. 

Four Christian Brothers and three teachers began the school's first batch in 1941, setting up a tent on land near the Sacred Heart Cathedral in New Delhi, with 32 students, before even constructing a building.

School named after Irish saint

The Christian Brothers named the school after an Irish saint. Brother Columban Doheny, a Christian Brother, originally designed the school building and named it Irish Saint. 

The school's first principal was Brother R.E. Butler. The school received affiliation with Cambridge University for the Senior Cambridge Examination in 1941. The school was expanded several times.
