Does pollution increase the risk of silent stroke? Learn about its risks from your doctor

Pollution is currently on the rise in many areas of the country, including Delhi-NCR. This is affecting people's health. The increased cold combined with pollution is causing strokes. Experts have explained its symptoms and causes.

Pollution increase

Air Pollution and Stroke: Increased pollution and cold weather pose a risk of silent stroke (paralysis). Doctors say it's crucial to protect yourself from pollution and cold during this time, especially for those with pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Experts explain why pollution can trigger silent strokes. Why people with high blood pressure and cholesterol are at risk and how to protect themselves.

Experts say that particles like nitrogen dioxide in pollution not only damage the lungs but also the brain. This increases the risk of stroke, a type of stroke whose symptoms are not easily detected. Silent strokes are blockages in the small nerves of the brain, leading to paralysis.

Why is pollution a risk factor for stroke?

Dr. Daljit Singh, Unit Head of the Neurosurgery Department at Max Hospital, explains that pollution is high right now and the cold has also increased.

This increased pollution has also led to an increase in PM 2.5 levels. These tiny polluted particles enter the lungs through the respiratory system and then travel throughout the body through the bloodstream. They can also damage the nerves in the brain.

These cause swelling in the veins and thicken the blood. This reduces oxygen supply to the veins, causing brain damage. This is especially true for those who already suffer from high blood pressure.

This is because these individuals already have a higher risk of blockage in the veins. Increased pollution further increases this risk. In such a situation, the cocktail of pollution and cold can cause a silent brain stroke. Its symptoms may not be immediately detected.

What kind of symptoms are seen?

  1. persistent severe headache
  2. Can disturb balance while walking
  3. looks blurry
  4. I vomit in the morning.
  5. How to prevent silent stroke

To prevent a silent stroke, it's essential to protect yourself from pollution and cold. Wear a mask and avoid going out in the morning and evening. If you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, control them.

If you take blood-thinning medications, discontinue them only after consulting a doctor. If you experience even one symptom of a silent stroke, go to the hospital immediately and avoid negligence.
