What ingredients are needed for Halwa?

To make poppy seed pudding, you'll need three-quarters of a cup (approximately 100 grams) of poppy seeds, an equal amount of sugar, and a little less than the poppy seeds (approximately 70 grams of ghee). 

Additionally, you'll need 4 to 5 small cardamoms, 1 cup (approximately 250 grams) of milk, 7-8 almonds, and an equal amount of pistachios and cashews. Now, let's learn the recipe.

Preparation for making pudding

To make poppy seed pudding, you'll need to prepare in advance. All you need to do is clean the poppy seeds thoroughly, rinse them with water, and soak them in water. After at least 4 to 5 hours, begin making the pudding.

How to make pudding?

  1. First of all, finely chop cashew nuts, almonds and pistachios and roast them in some desi ghee.
  2. Peel the cardamom, then remove the skin and crush only the seeds. You can make a powder or keep it coarsely ground, depending on your taste.
  3. Drain the soaked poppy seeds and grind them in a mixer. Add milk if needed.
  4. Heat half the ghee in a pan and add ground poppy seeds to it and fry it on low flame while stirring continuously till it gives a good aroma and turns golden.
  5. If the mixture seems dry, you can add a little more ghee. Then, transfer it to a bowl.
  6. Now add the remaining milk and sugar to the pan and stir well until dissolved. Add the roasted poppy seeds and cook until thickened.
  7. When the rawness of poppy seeds completely goes away and the halwa is ready, then add cardamom powder to it, along with pistachios, cashews and almonds.
  8. You can serve this pudding hot. Alternatively, you can store it in the refrigerator, as it stays good for at least 4 to 5 days.
